Black History through Poetry

Back again with some Black History
Flowing through with a dash of Poetry
Of people who contributed to this society
The ones who paved the way for humanity

Let me hip you to past times
When sculptor Selma Burke designed the profile of FDR that appears on the dime
And Maria W. Stewart was the first African American lady
To lecture about issues of antislavery

Paul Lawrence Dunbar was the first African American
To receive international recognition as a poet and a novelist
And Black History month officially began
In the year 1976

And when we talk about emancipation and proclamation
The NAACP was the fist interracial civil rights organization
And when we talk about ?freedom to express?
Hiram Revels was the first African American senator in Congress

And when we talk about breaking down walls
There is a man named Prince Hall
Who turned his home into the first black school
Teaching our people in Boston, the golden rule

What about Levi Coffin?s
Midwestern operation
Which helped slaves to escape became known as
The Underground Railroad?s ?Grand Central Station?

And for those who don?t know
Here is a little insider
About George Monroe and William Robinson
Were among the first black Pony Express Riders

So this is a little Black History
Expressed through poetry
Of the history of my Black family
Our contributions, our hand in this American society

Black is Beautiful. Black is everlasting knowledge
